Rocca di Pierle is a large medieval fortress located near Cortona in the province of Arezzo, overlooking an important route connecting the Val di Chiana, Lake Trasimeno, and the Valtiberina valley.

Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, it became a strategic stronghold contested by powerful families and rival cities such as Cortona and Perugia. The castle was extensively strengthened in the 14th century by the Casali family and served as a key defensive center for the region. In 1411 it came under Florentine control, and later, in 1576.

Its interior was deliberately dismantled on the orders of Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici to prevent enemies from using it as a refuge. Today, Rocca di Pierle survives as an impressive ruin featuring massive walls, towers, and one of the largest castle complexes in Tuscany. Recent restoration efforts have helped preserve the site, which remains a striking reminder of the area’s medieval history and military architecture.
