Rocca di Ripafratta
Italy, Italy
Rocca di Ripafratta, also known as the Rocca di San Paolino, is a medieval fortress located above the village of Ripafratta near Pisa, Tuscany.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Serchio Valley, it occupied a strategic position on the historic border between the rival city-states of Pisa and Lucca and controlled important routes through the region. Built as a military stronghold during the Middle Ages, the fortress was repeatedly strengthened over the centuries, including upgrades designed to withstand firearms.
Its walls, towers, and defensive structures played a key role in the long conflicts between Pisa and Lucca. Today, the Rocca survives as an impressive ruin surrounded by woodland. Although no longer fully preserved, it remains an important historical landmark, admired for its dramatic setting, panoramic views, and its role in the military history of medieval Tuscany.
