Rocca di Sala is a historic fortress that overlooks the town of Pietrasanta in Tuscany.

Believed to have Lombard origins, it was built to protect the nearby settlement and control a strategic section of the Via Francigena, an important medieval trade and pilgrimage route. The fortress was significantly strengthened in the 14th century by Castruccio Castracani, ruler of Lucca, and later expanded with the addition of the elegant Palazzo Guinigi in 1408.

Over the centuries, it hosted notable figures including emperors, kings, and popes, reflecting its political and military importance. Although it eventually lost its defensive role and fell into decline, Rocca di Sala remains one of Pietrasanta’s most important landmarks. Perched above the town among olive groves, it offers impressive views and stands as a lasting reminder of the region’s medieval history.
