Rocca Pia is a large Renaissance fortress in the heart of Tivoli, built in 1461 by Pope Pius II to strengthen papal control over the city and defend important routes leading to Rome.
Constructed partly with materials from the nearby Roman Amphitheater of Bleso, the fortress is characterized by its four massive circular towers connected by high defensive walls. Over the centuries, it served as a military stronghold, barracks, and prison before being restored and opened to visitors. Today, Rocca Pia is one of Tivoli’s most recognizable landmarks, offering a striking example of Renaissance military architecture and a glimpse into the city’s long history.
