Rocca Sforzesca is one of Imola’s most important historic landmarks and a remarkable example of medieval and Renaissance military architecture.

Its origins date back to the 13th century, but it was extensively rebuilt and strengthened in the 15th century under the Sforza family to withstand the growing power of artillery, giving it the imposing circular towers and defensive features seen today. The fortress played a significant role in the power struggles of Renaissance Italy and was associated with notable figures such as Caterina Sforza, Cesare Borgia, Leonardo da Vinci, and Niccolò Machiavelli.

After its military importance declined, it served for centuries as a prison before being restored in the 20th century. Today, Rocca Sforzesca is a museum and cultural attraction where visitors can explore towers, courtyards, walkways, and historic rooms.
