Rochlitz Castle
Rochlitz, Germany, Germany
Rochlitz Castle, perched on a rocky cliff above the Zwickauer Mulde River in Rochlitz, Saxony, Germany, dates back to the mid-10th century as an imperial fortress built to secure control over West Slavs.
It passed to the Wettin margraves in 1143, evolving from a medieval stronghold into a Renaissance residence by the late 14th century under Margrave Wilhelm I, later serving as a dower house, hunting lodge, and home to Saxon nobility eight times.
After surviving sieges in the Thirty Years' War, it functioned as an administrative center and prison from the 18th century until 1995, when it reopened as a museum showcasing its Romanesque wings, towers like "Light Jupe" and "Dark Jupe," and centuries of royal history.
