Romena Castle is a striking medieval fortress located in the Casentino Valley of Tuscany, near Pratovecchio.

First documented in the 11th century, it became one of the main strongholds of the powerful Guidi family, who used it to control important routes through the valley and oversee the surrounding territory. The castle is closely associated with Dante Alighieri, who found refuge there during his exile from Florence in the early 14th century.

Its history also includes the famous case of Mastro Adamo, a counterfeiter mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Although now partly in ruins, Romena Castle remains one of Tuscany’s most impressive medieval sites. Its surviving towers, walls, and commanding hilltop position offer beautiful views of the Casentino Valley and provide a vivid glimpse into the region’s medieval past.
