Misidentified in the 19th century as Roman due to its Romanesque style, it originally featured a timber-framed upper section before conversion in 1744-1746 into a bell tower for the nearby St. Ulrich church, which was demolished in 1839.
Overlooking the Eyach river valley amid Haigerloch's historic old town and Hohenzollern castle, it remains a prominent landmark accessible via scenic hiking paths.
