Royal Palace of Caserta

Caserta, Campania, Italy

The Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta) is the largest royal residence in the world by volume, located in Caserta, Campania, southern Italy, and was built for the Bourbon kings of Naples as their grand seat of power. Construction began in 1752 under King Charles VII of Naples (later Charles III of Spain) and architect Luigi Vanvitelli, inspired by Versailles but designed to be farther from sea attacks and Mount Vesuvius, though Charles never slept there as he abdicated in 1759; the palace was completed in 1780 for his son Ferdinand IV after 28 years and thousands of workers. The five-story, 47,000-square-meter structure contains approximately 1,200 rooms, including two dozen state apartments, a grand opera house modeled after Naples' Teatro San Carlo, the Palatine Library with three neoclassical rooms, and a majestic staircase leading to the Throne Room and elegantly frescoed State Apartments. Behind the palace lies an extensive 120-hectare Royal Park featuring cascading fountains (Dolphins, Aeolus, Ceres, and Diana and Actaeon), an English Garden with over 200 plant species, and a 3-kilometer waterway fed by the historic Carolino Aqueduct, all aligned in a telescopic perspective stretching toward Mount Briano's artificial waterfall. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 alongside the aqueduct and San Leucio Belvedere, the palace is celebrated as the "swan song" of Baroque architecture and has served as a filming location for major movies including Star Wars: Episode I and II, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, and Angels & Demons. In 1945, it was the site where German forces in Italy signed their unconditional surrender, and today it welcomes visitors to explore its opulent halls, gardens, and permanent exhibitions.
