Royal Palace of Tiebele

Tiebele, Nahouri Province, Burkina Faso

---

The Royal Palace of Tiébélé, located in Tiébélé in Nahouri Province, is the traditional royal court of the Kassena people and one of the most distinctive cultural landmarks in Burkina Faso.

This earthen architectural complex dates back to the 16th century and reflects the social organization, traditions, and cultural values of the Kassena community. The palace is famous for its beautifully decorated mud-brick houses, covered with intricate geometric patterns and symbolic designs. The buildings are constructed by men, while the decorative painting is traditionally carried out by women, who preserve and pass on this unique artistic knowledge from generation to generation.

Still inhabited and actively maintained, the royal court is a living example of traditional African architecture and culture. Its exceptional heritage value led to its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024, making it one of Burkina Faso’s most important cultural treasures.
