Ruine Burg Landskron
Oppenheim, Germany, Germany
Ruine Burg Landskron is the remains of a former imperial castle, originally called Reichsburg Oppenheim, built on a hill above the town of Oppenheim in Rheinhessen, Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.
It was first erected in the early 13th century to strengthen imperial control over the Rhine crossing and the town, but was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt before finally burning out in the Thirty Years’ War in 1621 and then being largely blown up and dismantled during later conflicts.
The site got its present name “Landskron” in the late 17th century and, after centuries as a stone quarry, was taken over by the state of Rhineland‑Palatinate in 1978 and carefully restored in the 1990s so today’s visitors can see the partial ruins, including the truncated keep used as an outlook, and enjoy views over the Rhine valley and the town.
