Ruine Burg Rheinberg
Lorch, Hesse, Germany, Germany
Ruine Burg Rheinberg is a medieval hill castle ruin perched on a steep rocky spur north of the Wisper River above Lorch in Hesse's Rheingau-Taunus district, Germany.
Built around 1165 by the Archbishop of Mainz and soon after enfeoffed to the Rhinegraves, it faced destruction in 1279 during the Sponheimer Feud, saw rebuilding with a square bergfried tower by 1315, and later became a Ganerbenburg shared by seven noble families by 1374.
Strategically positioned at 250-319 meters elevation within the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the site retains parts of its ring walls, chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross from 1471, and inner courtyard well remnants, though entry is restricted due to steep terrain, collapse risks, prohibition signs, and video surveillance.
