Ruine des Neuen Schlosses Tylsen
Salzwedel, Germany, Germany
Ruine des Neuen Schlosses Tylsen is the picturesque ruin of a Renaissance-style castle built in 1620-1621 by Thomas II. von dem Knesebeck near the village of Tylsen, a district of Salzwedel in Germany's Altmark region.
Once one of the region's grandest estates with three stories, ornate gables, a central courtyard entrance, a valuable library, Renaissance wood-panel paintings, and ancestral portraits including works by Antoine Pesne, it was expanded in the 1850s but survived World War II intact.
Destroyed during the 1948-1949 land reform when its roof tiles were stripped for local rebuilding, only facade fragments and foundation walls remain today amid a moat, drawing history enthusiasts despite its decay, with past plans noted for potential restoration into a cultural site.
