Ruine Freienstein
Freienstein-Teufen, Switzerland, Germany
Ruine Freienstein, also known as Burg Alten-Teufen, is a medieval hill castle ruin perched at 460 meters above sea level in Freienstein-Teufen, Canton of Zürich, Switzerland, overlooking vineyards in the lower Tösstal valley.
Built around 1250 by the Freiherren von Tengen and later held by the Lords of Freienstein until 1360, it changed hands multiple times before burning down in 1443 during a raid by Zürich forces led by Heinrich Schwend, with a prisoner reportedly dying in the smoke.
Donated to the canton in 1975 and conserved in 1976 with federal protection, it features a 13-meter tower serving as a viewpoint and a remarkable 33.5-meter-deep Sodbrunnen well shaft carved into the rock, popular today for hikes offering scenic vistas amid historic charm.
