Ruine Hinterburg
Germany, Germany
Ruine Hinterburg refers to two notable castle ruins in Germany, both medieval remnants offering striking views and hiking appeal.
Near Neckarsteinach in Hesse, the Hinterburg—also called Schadeck—is a spur castle ruin on a 165-meter hill above the Neckar River loop, destroyed in the Thirty Years' War around 1630 and restored in the 1960s, featuring a dark climbable tower with panoramic vistas of the river, forests, and Dilsberg Fortress as part of a trail linking four local castles.
In Tengen, Baden-Württemberg, another Hinterburg atop a 610-meter spur was built around 1150 by the Lords of Tengen, separated during a 1275 partition, destroyed twice in the 15th century by the Swabian League and Swiss forces, then quarried until 1850, leaving only a 20-meter (originally 32-meter) keep amid the historic old town.
