Ruine Hohenmelchingen
Burladingen, Germany
Ruine Hohenmelchingen is a large hill castle ruin located on a hill called "Halde" at approximately 820 meters above sea level, southeast of the village of Melchingen, part of Burladingen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The castle was likely built in the 12th century and was first mentioned in historical records in 1344 when the Counts of Württemberg gave their share of the castle and surrounding lands as a fief to Burkhard von Melchingen. Ownership of the castle changed hands multiple times, and by the 16th century, it fell into ruin, already described as a "Burgstall" (castle site of a ruined or abandoned castle) by 1580 and shown as a ruin on maps by 1592.
The castle complex once included a bergfried (main tower), palas (residential building), bathhouse, multiple courtyards, defensive walls including a thick enclosure wall about 240 meters long, moats, and other structures. The ruins visible today include well-preserved parts of the palas with walls still standing up to four stories high, foundation remains of the bergfried, and remnants of the ring moat.
The site is surrounded by forest and offers panoramic views of the sunny Alb region. It is accessible by marked hiking trails from Melchingen, making it a popular destination for visitors interested in medieval architecture and nature.
