Ruine Itterburg
Vöhl, Germany, Germany
Ruine Itterburg is a freely accessible ruin of a medieval hill castle perched on a long mountain ridge at 375 meters above sea level north of Thalitter in Vöhl, Hesse, Germany.
First mentioned in 1126 and likely built in the 11th century by the Lords of Itter—one of three Itterburgen including Steuerburg and Obere Burg—it became a fief of the Archbishopric of Mainz around 1190 before passing through various hands, including the Counts of Waldeck and Hessian landgraves.
Once a square Kastellburg with an 11x11-meter bergfried tower, 2-meter-thick walls, and an 8-hectare site, it fell into decay by the mid-15th century, was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War, and saw brief revival attempts before becoming municipal property in 1951, now popular for hikes with substantial wall remnants visible.
