Ruine Schauenburg
Oberkirch, Germany, Germany
Ruine Schauenburg is a well-preserved medieval hill castle ruin perched on a high spur terrace at 397 meters above the Renchtal valley near Oberkirch in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Built between 1070 and 1090 by Duke Berthold II of Zähringen and first documented in 1120, it served as a ganerbenburg under families like the Ebersteins before destruction likely in 1689 during the Nine Years' War by Vauban and Melac, becoming a maintained ruin by 1731.
Featuring remnants of three residential towers, a gate tower, ring wall, shield wall with chapel, and outer bailey with moat, the private property of the Barons of Schauenburg now draws hikers via the Renchtalsteig trail, offering valley views and a small museum in the chapel cellar.
