Ruins of Mankera Fort
Mankera, Pakistan
Mankera Fort, located in Mankera, Pakistan, has a history dating back to 540 CE when Raja Mal Khira established the original fortress called Mal Khir Kot. The fort expanded over centuries under various rulers including the Baloch, Pashtuns, and Sadozai Nawabs. Its brick fortifications were built during Baloch rule with later thick mud walls added under Pashtun control.
The fort spans about fifty acres with strong defensive walls, four gates with tall towers, and originally had a moat and several wells. In 1821, it was besieged for over three weeks by Sikh forces under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who eventually captured it, marking the end of Nawab Hafiz Ahmad Khan’s rule.
Over time, the fort fell into ruin, but it still contains remnants such as a well, tombs, and masonry signs reflecting its historical significance as a seat of power and defense in the region.
