Rundkirche Oberneisen
Oberneisen, Germany, Germany
Rundkirche Oberneisen is a unique round Protestant church in Oberneisen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, constructed between 1816 and 1819 by architect Johann Schrumpf, incorporating a 12th-century Romanesque bell tower from an earlier church first mentioned in 881.
Replacing a dilapidated medieval structure rebuilt in 958 and renovated in 1525 and 1733, its nearly circular (decagonal) design features ten thick, fluted columns supporting a hidden dome inspired by Rome's Pantheon, with a central round marble altar—rare north of the Alps—allowing the congregation to encircle it unlike traditional longitudinal churches.
The entrance's columned hall with ribless cross vault leads to three bells named Faith, Love, and Hope, making it the Taunus region's most significant Neoclassical building, celebrated for its communal worship layout and preserved heritage.
