Runkel Castle
Runkel, Germany, Germany
Runkel Castle is a striking medieval hill castle ruin overlooking the Lahn River in Runkel, Hesse, Germany, first documented in 1159 and likely built earlier by Siegfried von Runkel under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to guard a strategic river pass.
It endured family feuds, such as the 1250s split leading to rival Schadeck Castle nearby, expansions by the von Runkel and Wied-Runkel lines including a stone bridge completed in 1448, and destruction by Croatian troops in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War, leaving the upper castle in ruins while the lower parts were rebuilt.
Today, owned by the Princely House of Wied, it features a museum with historical rooms, torture chamber, wine press vault, climbable keep offering panoramic views, chapel, and archive.
