Ruppertstein Castle
Lemberg, Germany, Germany
Ruppertstein Castle near Lemberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, was built around 1200 by Count Henry I of Zweibrücken on the Ruprehtisberc hill as a watchtower outpost for nearby Lemberg Castle, following the 1198 acquisition of the site from Hornbach Abbey.
Likely constructed in the 13th century to defend the eastern borders of Zweibrücken territory, it featured an upper castle on a dramatic sandstone plateau and a lower castle at the rock base, with thick walls, natural defenses, and a dominant outcrop still visible today.
Its history fades after the Middle Ages, possibly abandoned or destroyed by the 1525 Peasants' War, leaving scant records and ruins now accessible via hiking trails, occasionally closed in spring for falcon breeding.
