Saaleck Castle
Naumburg, Germany, Germany
Saaleck Castle is a medieval hilltop ruin overlooking the Saale River near Naumburg, Germany, built in the early 12th century likely by the Margraves of Meissen as a strategic counterpoint to the nearby episcopal Rudelsburg, guarding vital trade routes like the Via Regia.
Owned by the noble von Saaleck family from 1140 and later the Schenken von Vargula until 1344, when it passed to the Bishops of Naumburg, the compact fortress featured an upper and lower bailey with shell limestone walls and round towers before falling into decay after 1523, serving as a quarry until around 1800.
Its remnants gained notoriety in 1922 when two assassins of German Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau hid there, leading to their demise during a police standoff.
