Saffenburg near Mayschoß in Germany's scenic Ahr Valley towers as the region's oldest documented hill castle ruin, built in the 11th century by Counts Adolf von Nörvenich and Adalbert von Saffenburg at 253 meters elevation to guard the river's strategic meander.

Spanning 260 by 80 meters with a bergfried tower, palas hall, and chapel, it endured sieges like the Swedish storming in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War and French occupation via deception in 1702, before deliberate destruction in 1704 to prevent reuse amid the War of the Spanish Succession. 

Secured in 2004 with a seasonal shelter, the free site rewards vineyard hikes with sweeping Ahrtal panoramas, historical panels, and ties to local wine heritage and infamous 16th-17th century witch trials.
