Samuel's Fortress
North Macedonia, North Macedonia
Samuel's Fortress is a prominent medieval stronghold atop a hill in Ohrid's old town, North Macedonia, originally tracing to a 4th-century BC fortification likely built by Philip II of Macedon and later expanded by Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria in the late 10th-early 11th century as his capital's key defense. It features massive ramparts, 18 surviving towers, and four gates enclosing the hilltop for panoramic lake and town views, with major 2003 restorations adding new battlements. Serving through Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, its strategic position protected against invasions until becoming a major tourist site today.
