Strumica Fortress
North Macedonia, North Macedonia
Strumica Fortress, also known as Carevi Kuli or Czar's Towers, is a medieval stone fortress overlooking the city of Strumica in southeastern North Macedonia, perched on a hill at 445 meters above sea level with panoramic views of the Strumica valley.
Its origins trace to ancient settlements around 3500 BC, with Hellenistic and Roman phases from the 3rd-4th centuries AD, but the prominent walls and up to seven towers date primarily to the Middle Ages, reinforced after Byzantine Emperor Basil II burned earlier structures post-Belasitsa battle in the 11th century.
The elongated oval complex, spanning 230 by 80 meters with a 550-meter perimeter, featured a western gate with three towers, a deep trench, and a central polygonal command tower (pyrgos) for defense, garrison life, and storage until Ottoman disuse in the 15th-16th centuries.
