San Lucido
Italy, Italy
San Lucido is a charming town and comune in the province of Cosenza in Calabria, southern Italy, located directly on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast about 40 kilometers west of Cosenza.
With approximately 6,000 to 7,500 residents, it is one of the few towns in the area where the historic center sits close to the sea rather than being kilometers inland, featuring a stunning 3-kilometer seaside promenade with golden beaches and crystal-clear waters perfect for relaxation.
The town's historic center is introduced by the remains of the ancient Ruffo Castle, which preserves its tower and stone bridge, and this is where the famous Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo (1744–1827) was born. Visitors can explore narrow alleyways and ancient palaces between Piazza Giardinetti and Corso Umberto I, tour churches including San Giovanni Battista next to the castle, and see the Monument to Cilla from Greek mythology.
San Lucido has ancient roots dating back to the 5th–4th century BC, possibly as the Greek outpost of Temesa, and is known for its traditional white tuff extraction from mountain quarries, prickly pears, and delicious local capers. The best time to visit is July, when the town celebrates the "Vulàta," a historical reenactment of the 16th-century battle against Saracen pirates led by Dragut Pasha.
