San Pio delle Camere Castle is a medieval fortress that stands above the village of San Pio delle Camere in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

First documented in 1173, it was built as a defensive refuge where local residents and their livestock could seek protection during times of danger. The castle is known for its unusual triangular layout, with a distinctive central tower positioned at the highest point and surrounded by fortified walls and smaller defensive towers.

Its strategic location allowed it to oversee important routes across the Navelli Plain and the historic Tratturo Magno shepherds’ trail. The fortress was badly damaged during the 1424 campaign led by the condottiero Braccio da Montone and was never fully rebuilt. Today, its atmospheric ruins remain one of the area’s most important historical landmarks, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into Abruzzo’s medieval past.
