Sandeman Fort
Balochistan, Pakistan
Sandeman Fort, perched on limestone high above the town now called Zhob in Balochistan, was built in 1890 on the orders of British political officer Robert Groves Sandeman to serve both as a defensive cantonment and to oversee the local population.
Its long, ship-like walls enclose accommodations for troops and officers, with Sandeman’s own residence—locally called the “castle”—at one end, complete with original colonial-era furniture and even his piano.
After Pakistan’s independence the fort became the office and residence of the district’s deputy commissioner, and in 2019 was declared a heritage site with plans to convert it into a public museum while preserving its distinctive 19th-century architecture.
