Sandersleben, now part of Arnstein in Germany's Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt, lies on the Wipper River about 17 km north of Eisleben.

First documented in the 10th century, it grew as a trade hub at crossing routes linking cities like Halle, Magdeburg, and Erfurt, with a castle first mentioned in 1316 that became the Anhalt principality's administrative center, featuring city walls and rebuilt in 1600 as a Renaissance residence used as a widow's seat by Princess Dorothea von Anhalt-Dessau from 1619-1631, now commercially utilized.

Industrial booms came in the 19th century via copper mining, a 1850 sugar factory, 1862 Ludwigshütte ironworks, and its role as a railway junction on the Halle-Halberstadt, Güsten-Sangerhausen lines, and the strategic "Kanonenbahn" from Berlin to Metz. 

The town preserves history through its 2002-opened Stadtmuseum in a restored 1865 prison building, showcasing local life, courts, police from medieval times to DDR era, Stone Age artifacts, schools, and furnishings.
