Sandfly Bay
New Zealand, New Zealand
Sandfly Bay is a wild, scenic beach on the Otago Peninsula, about 15 km east of central Dunedin on New Zealand’s South Island, known for its broad stretch of sand, large dunes, and relaxed but rugged coastal atmosphere.
The bay is a Department of Conservation‑managed wildlife reserve where visitors can often see New Zealand sea lions, fur seals, and yellow‑eyed penguins, especially near dusk and dawn, and the steep dunes above the beach also make it a popular spot for photography and short, scenic walks or sand‑sliding.
Despite its name, the “sandflies” come from the strong wind that blows sand around rather than biting insects, and the beach has no facilities, so it suits people who enjoy a quiet, raw coastline with good wildlife viewing just a short drive from the city.
