Verified Santa Caterina Dello Ionio

Calabria, Italy

Santa Caterina dello Ionio is a historic hilltop village in Calabria, Italy, founded around the year 1000 as inhabitants moved inland to escape Saracen pirate raids along the coast.

Originally surrounded by defensive walls with four gates, only the "Water Gate" remains today. The town is known for its medieval layout with narrow winding streets, granite portals on aristocratic palaces, and several Baroque-style churches including the main church dedicated to Santa Caterina, the town's patron saint.

It has faced significant challenges, including a devastating fire in 1983 that heavily damaged parts of the village, including churches and noble buildings, but much has been restored. The community honors its patron saint with a long traditional feast celebrated with prayers and rituals, and the village retains its unique blend of history, religious traditions, and scenic views of the Ionian Sea below.

The castle once standing there was demolished, but the remnants of its medieval and feudal past are still evident in the architecture and cultural heritage of the town.
