Saru Castles are a pair of historic mountain fortresses located northeast of Semnan in northern Iran. The site consists of the Greater Saru Castle, which is relatively well preserved, and the Lesser Saru Castle, which is largely in ruins. The castles occupy strategic positions on opposite sides of a valley and were designed to control and defend the surrounding area. The larger fortress is notable for its strong defensive features, including multiple outer walls, a complex entrance system, and an advanced water collection and storage system. The smaller castle helped protect nearby natural springs that supplied water to the main fortress. The castles are believed to have been used by several historical dynasties and were later associated with the Nizari Ismailis. Today, Saru Castles are valued as important examples of medieval Iranian military architecture and offer insight into the region’s rich history.
