Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve, located in the Jalal-Abad Region of western Kyrgyzstan, is one of the country’s most beautiful protected natural areas.

Established in 1959 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978, it encompasses rugged mountains, rich forests, alpine meadows, and the stunning Sary-Chelek Lake, along with several smaller lakes. The reserve is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, including ancient walnut-fruit forests, wild apple and pear trees, juniper woodlands, and a variety of wildlife such as lynx, brown bears, wild boar, and numerous bird species.

Some of the higher mountain areas even provide habitat for the elusive snow leopard. At the heart of the reserve lies the turquoise-colored Sary-Chelek Lake, surrounded by forested slopes and dramatic mountain scenery. Its pristine landscapes, hiking opportunities, and relative remoteness make the reserve one of the most treasured nature destinations in Kyrgyzstan and a favorite spot for ecotourism and outdoor adventure.
