Verified Saryazd Castle

Iran, Iran

Sar Yazd Castle, also called Saryazd Castle, is a massive Sassanid-era fortification located in the village of Sar Yazd, about 50 kilometers south of Yazd in Iran’s Yazd Province.

Built mainly of mud brick and adobe between the 3rd and 7th centuries AD, the fortress covers roughly 7,800–8,000 square meters and is organized around two concentric defensive walls: an outer wall about six meters high with a few towers and an inner wall about nine meters high with multiple circular towers, all surrounded by a moat that was historically about six meters wide and four meters deep.

Inside, the castle contains around 460–480 rooms spread over three floors, reached through narrow, hidden entrances and tight passages that allowed only one person to move at a time, a design deliberately meant to make intrusion very difficult. Today, Saryazd Castle is a well-known tourist attraction near historic caravansaries on the road between Yazd and Kerman.

It is registered as a national heritage monument in Iran (number 1,084, registered in 1975) and is open to visitors, offering a compact but impressive example of early Persian desert architecture, layered fortifications, and the way communities in arid regions organized security and storage around large fortified complexes.
