Verified Sassi Punhoon Mazar

Pakistan, Pakistan

Sassi Punhoon Mazar is the shrine of the legendary lovers Sassi and Punhoon, located in the Lasbela district of Balochistan, Pakistan, about 65–80 km from Karachi on the way to Sonmiani, and reached by a short off-road journey through mountains and valleys.

The site is tied to the ancient folktale of Sassi (also Sassui) and Punnu (Punnhoon), one of the seven tragic romances of Sindh recorded in the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, in which Sassi, a beautiful girl from Bhambore, is separated from her lover Punnu, a prince of Kech-Makran, and after a long and arduous search is swallowed by the earth, while Punnu later dies beside her grave, and the two become eternal symbols of love and spiritual longing.

The mazar itself is described as a simple, typical Pakistani shrine with an empty grave placed at the spot where, according to tradition, Sassi disappeared or was taken underground, and the actual burial is symbolic rather than a physical remains. Visually, the mazar is a modest structure on an open, hilly landscape, often visited by devotees and travelers who come to hear or recite the dastan (story) of Sassi Punhoon and to experience the local setting said to be associated with the lovers’ journey.
