Sayn Castle
Bendorf, Germany, Germany
Sayn Castle is a neo-Gothic palace in Bendorf-Sayn, Germany, originally a 15th-century manor house built by the Reiffenberg barons below the older medieval Burg Sayn ruins.
Expanded into a Baroque residence starting in 1757, it was dramatically remodeled between 1848 and 1850 by Prince Ludwig zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn with French architect François Joseph Girard—later Louvre chief—incorporating iron elements cast at the nearby Sayner Hütte foundry amid Gothic revival trends.
Heavily damaged in World War II with its core destroyed beyond the standing walls, the privately owned Schloss was meticulously restored from 1995 to 2000 using state funds, now serving as a wedding venue and part of the Kulturpark Sayn with its chapel featuring Moritz von Schwind stained glass.
