Schanze Süderholm
Heide, Germany, Germany
Schanze Süderholm is a late medieval defensive earthwork near Heide in Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, part of the Süderhamme fortifications built by local farmers between the early 15th and mid-16th centuries to protect against invasions.
Positioned east of Heide between the town and Süderholm on a marshy wooded ridge, it featured multiple ditches, earthen ramparts, and a small stone tower armed with cannons, as described in 15th-century chronicles during conflicts like the 1404 feuds with Holstein counts.
The site, including a "Hamhus" structure, was captured and partially dismantled by Danish forces in 1559 after fierce resistance, leaving visible remnants today marked by information panels at the B 203 and L 316 junction.
