Schaumburg Castle near Balduinstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, originated as a 12th-century military fortress first mentioned in 1197 as "Schowenburg," initially held by the Counts of Leiningen before fragmenting among families like Nassau, Virneburg, Diez, Weilnau, Isenburg, and Limburg, with the House of Westerburg expanding it from 1279 amid rivalries that prompted nearby Balduinstein Castle's construction.

Transformed gradually into a residential schloss from the late 18th century in Classicist then Neo-Gothic styles—featuring an octagonal basaltic form with corner towers—it served Hungarian Palatine Archduke Stephan as exile residence from 1848, housing his mineral collection until his 1867 death, later passing to Waldeck-Pyrmont before private sales in 1983.

Today, the privately owned neo-Gothic complex with outer bailey remnants blends medieval defenses and 1850s restorations, though recent neglect has impacted its state.
