Schlemmin Castle
Schlemmin, Germany, Germany
Schloss Schlemmin in Schlemmin, Germany, stands on the foundations of a 14th-century moated castle built by Heinrich von Thun, a princely councilor who settled there around 1320 from Lower Saxony, featuring nearly 2-meter-thick walls and defensive moats.
In 1846-1850, Prussian Major General Wilhelm Ulrich von Thun commissioned Berlin architect Eduard Knoblauch to demolish the outdated fortress and erect the current neo-Gothic manor house, which hosted Prussian King Wilhelm IV in 1853 and later Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm I in 1857.
Used as a hospital and refugee camp during World War II, then nationalized in East Germany for various purposes like a market and school, it was privately purchased in 1999, restored, and opened as a hotel in 2002.
