Schloß Altenhausen
Altenhausen, Germany, Germany
Schloss Altenhausen in Altenhausen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, evolved from a medieval moated lowland castle first documented in 1303, originating possibly in the 11th or 12th century on even earlier structures.
After destruction in 1351 during conflicts between Magdeburg and Braunschweig forces, it changed hands repeatedly among dukes, archbishops, and nobles like the von der Schulenburg family from 1485, surviving the Thirty Years' War's devastation through 17th-18th century rebuilds that added Renaissance residential wings, a neo-Gothic palas with integrated bergfried, and Baroque farmyard buildings on the old ring wall.
Its current historicist appearance, featuring a 50,000 m² park, stems from 1901 expansions by Ferdinand Schorbach; expropriated in 1945, it now operates as a hotel and event venue.
