Schloß Birkenau
Birkenau, Germany, Germany
Schloß Birkenau refers to structures within Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp near the Polish village of Brzezinka (German: Birkenau), Germany-occupied Poland.
Construction began in October 1941 as a planned POW camp but opened in March 1942 as a key extermination center for Jews, later serving forced labor and mass murder functions with gas chambers, crematoria, barracks, and barbed wire enclosures.
Over its operation until 1945, around 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed there through gassing, starvation, and disease, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site preserving ruins like dynamited crematoria as stark evidence of the Holocaust.
