Schloß Borbeck
Essen, Germany, Germany
Schloß Borbeck in Essen, Germany, is a Baroque moated castle dating back to a 9th-century Frankish estate first documented in 869, becoming the preferred residence of Essen's prince-abbesses from the 14th century onward.
Its current three-story main building with Renaissance northern wing, corner towers, and curved Baroque gables emerged from 18th-century expansions under abbesses like Franziska Christine, surrounded by a moat flowing into a castle pond and one of the Rhineland's oldest English landscape parks featuring the Fürstinnenbusch woodland.
Acquired by the city in 1941 and now a cultural center since the 1980s, it hosts concerts, exhibitions, adult education, weddings, and events in its farm building amid free public park access.
