Schloß Oberhausen
Germany, Germany
Schloss Oberhausen in Oberhausen, Germany, traces its origins to a late 12th- or early 13th-century moated castle known as Overhus, strategically positioned to guard a key ford over the Emscher River and frequently contested during conflicts like the Eighty Years' War.
By 1770 it passed to the Westerholt-Gysenberg family, who let it decay until 1801, when Maximilian Friedrich Graf von Westerholt-Gysenberg had the old fortress demolished and commissioned a neoclassical manor house nearby, completed around 1804 with expansions by 1820 and landscaped gardens.
Acquired by the city in 1896, it became a cultural hub after World War II repairs, now housing the Ludwig Galerie art museum focused on prints and photographs, alongside a folk park and small zoo.
