Schloß Broich
Mülheim, Germany
Schloß Broich in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, is one of the oldest late Carolingian castle complexes in the German-speaking world, dating back to the late 9th century.
It was originally built as a fortified military camp by East Frankish Duke Henry around 883/884 to protect the Ruhr crossing and the Hellweg trade route from Viking invasions. Over the centuries, the castle evolved into a noble residence, notably ruled by the lords of Broich, closely related to regional counts of Limburg.
Important historical events include expansions in the 12th and 13th centuries, the construction of a Gothic palace, and its development into a grand residence in the 17th century by Count Wilhelm Wirich. The castle was also a residence of Princess Luise, later Queen of Prussia, in the late 18th century.
Today, Schloss Broich is owned by the city and serves as a cultural venue hosting events like medieval festivals and concerts. It also houses a historical museum showcasing the region's medieval and local history. The castle is surrounded by a large park extending along the Ruhr River, offering scenic views and cultural experiences.
