Schloß Hohenthurm
Landsberg, Germany
Schloß Hohenthurm is a historic castle located in the village of Hohenthurm, part of the town of Landsberg in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The castle’s origins trace back to the 12th century when it was built as a low Roman watchtower, later expanded into a high Romanesque bergfried (keep) and fortified over time. The castle was originally owned by the ministerial family "de alta turi" from at least 1244 until their extinction in 1398. It became part of the Landsberg territory and was associated with the Archbishopric of Magdeburg after 1347.
The castle suffered significant destruction during the Schmalkaldic War in 1547 but was rebuilt, notably in the 18th century in Baroque style on the foundations of a medieval brewery building. From 1836 to 1945, it served as the residence of the counts von Wuthenau, who developed it further as an agricultural estate. The castle is perched on a porphyry hill and features a prominent tower known as the "Hoher Turm," which is a local landmark.
The nearby 12th-century church and the Sunday ponds add to the idyllic village atmosphere. Today, Schloß Hohenthurm is privately owned and stands as a cultural monument representing centuries of regional history shaped by medieval fortification, noble residence, and rural development.
