Schloß Schweppenburg
Brohl-Lützing, Germany
Schloss Schweppenburg, located in Brohl-Lützing, Germany, was first mentioned as a castle in 1365 and was part of a curial fief granted in 1377 to Arnold von Schweppenburg. It was transformed into a Baroque-style palace between 1637 and 1639 under Bertram von Metternich, losing its original medieval fortress character. The old defensive structures were dismantled in 1785.
Since 1716, the estate has been owned by a branch of the Cologne patrician family von Geyr, who added "von Schweppenburg" to their name. The castle was mainly used sporadically for hunting retreats. Architectural highlights include saloons adorned with antique furniture, paintings, and hunting trophies, as well as a Roman altar discovered nearby.
The castle is privately owned and not open to the public, but its historical significance remains evident through its preserved Baroque appearance and connection to the region's noble history.
