Schloss Altranstädt
Markranstädt, Germany, Germany
Schloss Altranstädt, in the Altranstädt district of Markranstädt near Leipzig in Saxony, Germany, began as a monastic estate around 1200 by monks from Altzella Abbey and evolved into a three-winged Renaissance castle by the early 17th century, incorporating a Romanesque tower shared with the adjacent church.
It gained fame during the Great Northern War when Swedish King Charles XII used it as his headquarters from September 1706 to 1707, hosting the Altranstädter Frieden treaty on September 24, 1706, where August the Strong of Saxony renounced the Polish crown, and the 1707 Altranstädter Konvention granting religious tolerance to Silesian Protestants.
Owned by families like von Hohenthal until 1945, it served as housing until 1998 and now functions as a museum with the preserved "Friedenszimmer," open weekends from May to October, supported by a preservation association.
