Schloss Bad Bergzabern
Bad Bergzabern, Germany, Germany
Schloss Bad Bergzabern is a prominent landmark in the town center of Bad Bergzabern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, originally constructed as a moated castle by the Counts of Saarbrücken in the 12th-13th centuries and first documented in 1333. It passed to the Palatinate in 1385 and then to Palatinate-Zweibrücken in 1410, but was destroyed in 1525 by rebellious Lorraine peasants before Duke Ludwig II rebuilt it as a Burgschloss—a hybrid of fortified castle and residence—with the notable south wing and two round gun towers completed by 1532, protected by a moat. Once home to the dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, it now serves as the local government's administrative headquarters.
