Schloss Bartensleben
Erxleben, Börde, Germany, Germany
Schloss Bartensleben in Groß Bartensleben, part of Erxleben in the Börde district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, developed from a 12th-century moated lowland fortress that faced repeated destruction, including by Emperor Otto IV around 1214 and fires in 1319 and 1441.
Long held by the von Alvensleben family, who divided it in 1554 into "white" and "black" lines, it was rebuilt in Baroque style in the mid-18th century by the von Veltheim family, with Heinrich Adrian von Veltheim expanding it in 1757 to feature three wings with mansard roofs, Rococo interiors, and a surrounding landscape park with ponds and a Baroque fountain.
Renovated between 2020 and 2022 into a care home, the sandstone island castle retains dates like 1471, 1567, and 1578 marking its layered architectural history.
